The 14th of February: A Valentine's Day Special

The most romantic day of the year is just around the corner. Couples are already planning their dates, boys are busy thinking of what surprises or gifts to offer to their special someone, girls with bouquet of flowers on their hands will be a common view again and sending chocolates, flower and cards with messages of love to show affection will be a common practice for that day.

So how did the most romantic day of the year started? Valentine’s Day got its name from a famous saint. St. Valentine was a priest from Rome in the 3rd century AD who was imprisoned and killed on the 14th of February. The celebration of Valentine’s day originated from a Roman festival called “Lupercalia” where boys drew names of girls from a box and during the festival they will be a couple and sometimes they will get married.

Couples and people who are in love will surely enjoy this day but how about the single persons who are not yet shot by the magical arrow of Cupid? According to statistics, 15% of US women send themselves flowers on Valentine’s Day. If you are fond of browsing through your Facebook accounts, you might have seen the viral post about “Boyfriends for Rent”. The viral post was made by a guy named Agassi Ching on his Instagram account, the post includes his rate card, bio, the things he can’t do, the personas he’s willing to put off and even his promo packages. But Mr. Ching clarified at the end of his post that he was not serious about the “boyfriend for rent services”. Following the viral post, a lot of Facebook users also wrote funny “date for rent” posts on their Facebook walls stating that they are available for rent on Valentine’s Day.

The most romantic day of the year is not just for couples or people who are in love, single people can also enjoy it with their families, friends or even with their beloved pets. We should always put into mind that Valentine’s Day is not the only day that we can show our love and affection; we can always make everyday a Valentine’s Day as long as we are with our love ones. It doesn’t matter if you’re single, in a relationship or married, as long as you’re capable of giving and showing love you can always find a way to make the most out of everything. Let us throw away the negativity and not be bitter, and if you still feel alone and unloved on that day, you should always remember that there’s a God out there who loves you unconditionally and you are more than blessed because of that.
